When Is the Right Time to See a Psychologist?

Everyone inevitably goes through difficult life circumstances at times, and we are naturally resilient. There isn’t an absolute “right time” to see a psychologist, but there are some questions to consider if you’re wondering whether to seek help:

  • How are we feeling?

While all feelings are valid, consider their intensity and duration. Have these emotions persisted for a long time? Do you see a way to manage or resolve them?

  • Have there been changes in behaviour or daily functioning?

Are your sleep, appetite, or energy levels affected? When was the last time you truly enjoyed something? Are you able to focus and complete your daily tasks? Do you feel in control of your actions?

  • How are your relationships?

Are you able to relate to others and engage with the world in a way that feels satisfying?

Talking to your GP can also be a helpful first step in seeking support. There are many mental health screening tools available online, such as this quick questionnaire: K10 Screening.

Financial circumstances can sometimes create barriers to seeking help. Some may also wonder, “Is therapy worth it?” Evidence-based therapy can be beneficial for many people, especially over the long term. I always encourage clients to discuss any specific concerns with their therapist directly, whether about therapy goals, the therapeutic relationship, or financial considerations.
